Scan

Sometimes it might not be possible to get an original photo to me. Perhaps you are living interstate or overseas, or the photo is stuck into a photo album or you simply do not trust your precious photographs with your local mail carrier (definitely understandable!)

So based on this, I thought that I might share the settings that I require for your image to be included into the DAB archive, allowing you to supply the image directly to me without ever losing sight of your irreplaceable memory. Listed below are settings that should be achievable from most home scanners. As each brand and model of scanner is different, these settings may be hidden under an “Advanced” tab, or tucked away in a different screen of your supplied software. I will do my best to help where possible.

Firstly, even though your image may be Black & White, I require it as Full Colour. It sounds a little pointless, but this captures more of the detail in the image.

• Full Colour (even if it is a Black and White image).
• TIFF Format (often the software defaults to JPG – TIFF is uncompressed and holds more detail, as a consequence, the file size will be much larger).
• 1200dpi (often software will have presets such as 72dpi, 150dpi, 300dpi and ‘Custom’. 1200dpi is rather large, but allows me the ability zoom in and repair minute details such as dust and scratches).
• Leave some extra room beyond the photo boundaries – I will crop it down precisely.

The average file size for a class photograph will be between 85Mb and 170Mb depending on the size of the original. This may seem ridiculously large to you, but is a sign that you have done it all correctly. Once this is all done, save the image to DropBox, GoogleDrive, OneDrive, iCloud etc and share the link with me. (If you know the names of any people in the photo, please include these in a document with the same name as the photo) If you do not have access to any of these cloud services please let me know, as I have a link that can allow you to drop files directly to me.

Of course, if you get stuck, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to assist!
